Child Labor

Today, the kids and I loaded up the car with 1 mop bucket, 2 trash cans, a sand pail, 2 sand shovels, 1 sand rake, a sheet to protect the car, and a garden shovel. We were off! To the cemetery.

Did you know that some cemeteries give away their dirt? For free? The groundskeeper was on site, so I walked over and verified with him that it was okay to have some dirt. He was happy to get rid of some from his BIG pile, so I drove on over to the mound of dirt and got some.

The big kids pulled out their shovels and helped me load up all the buckets. They asked a few good questions about cemeteries. We had a nice conversation about the resurrection of the dead and baptism. Good conversation while digging in a cemetery. They also wanted to know if they could climb the pile (no, they tried, they couldn't make it to the top--it was too big!).

Then, we loaded back up and headed back home. The dirt buckets took a wagon ride to the back yard and almost filled in an Aiti sized hole. (Grrrr.) The kids did ALL the work of emptying the buckets. They emptied them scoop by scoop until the buckets were almost empty, then they dumped them out. They were careful to smooth the dirt when they were done.

After that, David, Jr. took Kaytlin for a ride around the backyard in the wagon. David LOVED it. Kaytlin HATED it. Then Kaytlin and I gave Allyssa and David a ride back to the garage to put the wagon away. Then, they cleaned up the equipment in the backyard.

One hole (almost) filled. How many more will she dig this winter?
