Today, I told the kids that their dad was coming home from work early because he had to go back for a meeting later in the evening. They were excited about the prospect of going to the pool and making homemade ice cream with their dad.
Later, I told them that their dad would be running late. Here is how the conversation went:
Me: "Well, someone died, so Dad is meeting with the family to talk about the funeral."
Allyssa: "Oh, that poor family."
David: "Okay."
Neither whined or complained. Both simply felt compassion for the grieving family even though we didn't even know their names at that time.
It it nice to see them understand that things don't always go the way we plan and sometimes other people's needs come before our own.
