Spelling and Phonics

Allyssa has shown great enthusiasm for words recently. During homeschool she uses wooden nickles that have letters on them to spell the word of the week. This week the word is "octopus." This isn't a spelling word, but simply a word that begins with her letter of the week. She places the wooden nickle letters on top of the letters that are on a sheet of paper so that they match. After she is done with that, I use the letters to make words that she can sound out and spell.

Today, she spelled "cop," "top," "pot," "put," and many other words. She spells each of them on her own using her wooden nickle letters.

She has learned a lot through this activity and has been applying similar concepts in her artwork. Yesterday, she made bracelets for each of us. On them she wrote the word "play," except that she spelled it "PLLA." That is how she pronounces it. She also wrote each of our names on our bracelets. Daddy's bracelet was supposed to say "Play with me please." It said, "PLLAY ME PES." She had added the 'y' to play, forgot the with, and misspelled the "please."

It is so much fun to watch her learn how to spell and sound out words.
