Our kitchen isn't perfect. Shortly after we moved in we called the realtor who represented the seller of our house and asked her what her opinion was about redoing the kitchen. She told us that in this neighborhood, it wasn't worth it. Don't do it.
Well, that's all well and good if you like your kitchen, and if you don't break it. While the advice wasn't perfect for us, it did help us decide what types of products to use.
Our counter top was damaged when we moved in. Besides the normal knife marks and gouges on the laminate tops, it also had several large cracks in it. For some reason instead of making a right angle at the wall with the laminate (also the back splash), the builder curved it up the wall. The dead space behind the curve was just begging to be cracked. We didn't do any additional damage really to the counter top, but it was something that we weren't really fond of.
The cabinets themselves had some wear. The laminate sticker over the particle board doors was damaged in some areas. There were some cracks and such in some of the cabinets themselves. Most things were purely cosmetic, until I broke the door.
I broke the door on one of the cabinets. Not just any cabinet, one that could be seen when you walk in our front door. Welcome to our house. Here is our broken cabinet!
We were planning on replacing the cabinets and counter top this summer until David, Jr.'s surgery got scheduled and we discovered that I'm expecting a baby girl. Instead of working on the kitchen, we decided to do a smaller, less expensive job of replacing the doors on the cabinets in the bathrooms. David is quite handy and happens to have a router, so we were really pleased with the idea of nice cabinet doors in the bathrooms. Until I broke the cabinet in the kitchen.
Now we could have just replaced the door, but what fun would that be?
Stay tuned for more...
